What Employees Want From Office Space: Flexibility

About a year ago, I was facing a big office space decision. Do we stay in our current office or move? Keep the current space design or blow it out? Our landlord paid for a fancy architect to come up with new layouts and designs. In the end, we decided to stay in place, sign […] The post What Employees Want From Office Space: Flexibility appeared first on The MatriX Files. Full Story

Why Your CEO Needs to Attend Your Redesign Meeting

I attend a lot of kickoff meetings. For  redesigns, mobile apps, custom databases, you name it.   The best kickoff meetings are the ones where the CEO, Executive Director, the EVP or President attend, participate actively and provide insight. Why? When the top person in the organization attends a meeting, staff know that meeting is […] The post Why Your CEO Needs to Attend Your Redesign Meeting appeared first on The MatriX Files. Members Want Curation and Insight from Their Associations – Part One

One of the best parts of my job is conducting user interviews. Nearly every Matrix Group project starts with a User Persona exercise where we interview staff to glean their most important target audiences. Then a team of Matrix Group staff interview people in each group. Whenever I can, I help conduct these interviews because […] The post Members Want Curation and Insight from Their Associations – Part One appeared first on The MatriX Files. Full Story

Maybe We Should Stop Trying to Generate More Traffic to Government Affairs Web Pages

Clients almost always list as one of their top goals,“Increase traffic to the website.” Sounds reasonable! Organizations are competing for eyeballs. Nearly every client has a government affairs department that laments the low number of visits to their portion of the site. But is this where we should be driving web traffic? Full Story

Does Your Website Need a Redesign or Refresh?

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a meeting with a client who was interested in redesigning their website. “Why?” I asked. The site looks pretty good, the site is mobile-friendly, and the analytics are pretty good. So what’s driving the desire for a redesign? The answer: They wanted to make a few changes to the home […] The post Does Your Website Need a Redesign or Refresh? appeared first on The MatriX Files. Full Story

Just Say No! to Stock Photography

Whenever I meet with clients about their websites, the conversation inevitably turns to the topic of stock photos. Most companies are photo challenged, so they ask us to help them find good stock imagery. My answer? Just say NO! to stock photography, especially of people! I feel hypocritical even writing this blog post because this […] Full Story

When Is It Time to Implement Responsive Design?

A few weeks ago, I conduced a webinar on implementing a "Mobile First" strategy. By mobile first, my co-host Alex Pineda and I mean a strategy where you consider the needs of mobile users first. Why? Because mobile usage is growing faster than desktop usage, because mobile usage is greater than desktop in some countries (like India), and because designing for mobile (especially smartphones) is harder than designing for tablet and desktop. During the webinar, a big topic of discussion was, "When is it time to implement responsive design?" My answer to this question is: NOW. Here's what I usually hear from prospects and clients. Objection #1: "My mobile traffic is tiny." This might be true today but mobile usage is growing really fast. ... Full Story

The Psychology of Web Response Times

Hi!  I’m David Reich, and I’ve been interning at Matrix Group for the summer. I’ll be writing a post summarizing my experience here before I leave, but I’ve still got a bit more time, so today I’m posting some slightly more technical content. One of the most interesting things I did for my internship was research. A few times, I was assigned to study and summarize certain aspects of web development.  This meant I got to learn about both my research topics and, just as usefully, how to write professionally. Recently, I did some research about design and psychology of response times in application development. Not just web app development, either - the principles that apply to Matrix Group’s products are just as applicable ... Full Story
